The variety is popular along with juniper medium "Pfitzeriana Glauca" ("Pfitzeriana Glauka").
Characteristic and Description
The botanical description of juniper medium "Old Gold" declares the high attractiveness of the plant and the promise of its use in landscape design. A compact, slow-growing shrub ten years after planting does not exceed a height of 50-60 cm with a wide diameter, the correct shape of the crown per meter. The needles are very decorative, golden yellow in summer and brownish yellow in winter.
Due to its small size, the plant is perfect for growing as a container crop. The crown diameter of an adult juniper is 3 m at a height of 1.5 m. Shrub is characterized by a horizontal arrangement of shoots. The annual growth rate of the plant does not exceed 5.5-7.5 cm. The scaly and needle greenish-yellow color of the crown looks very impressive, and good frost resistance allows planting and cultivation of Old Gold Juniper in most regions of our country.
Juniper Old Gold: characteristics of the variety
Juniper seedlings must be planted in areas well lit and warmed by sunlight. It is allowed to use landing places with slight shading. The standard distance between planted plants should be about 1-1.5 m. A properly prepared landing pit for seedlings should have a diameter that is twice the size of the earthen coma of the planted plant, and a depth of at least 70-80 cm. A layer of high-quality drainage made of sand or brick fight must be poured onto the bottom of the landing pit. The thickness of the drainage layer can vary from 15 to 20-25 cm. When immersing the root system of the plant in the planting pit, it is important to monitor the location of the root neck, which should not be buried in the soil.
For juniper, it is preferable to use areas represented by soils with a slightly acidic or neutral reaction. A nutrient soil mixture prepared from two parts of peat, one part of sifted sand and one part of soddy soil should be poured onto the drainage layer. A good result is the addition of special complex fertilizers to the soil mixture. Immediately after planting, abundant watering is mandatory. and, if necessary, shading the planting until the crop is fully acclimatized.
Strict adherence to growing technology and proper care allow you to get a healthy, durable and beautiful plant. Caring for a plant is not difficult and requires compliance with the following recommendations:
- it must be remembered that junipers do not tolerate excess moisture, and excessively plentiful and frequent watering can cause illness and decay of the root system;
- watering should be carried out in the dry period, but not more than two or three times for the entire growing season;
- juniper bushes should be pruned very carefully, due to the slow growth and long recovery of the plant;
- all dry branches are subject to mandatory removal, as well as branches that interfere with the full growth of the bush;
- when forming a hedge, it is necessary to carefully but carefully remove all protruding shoots.
Despite the fact that this popular representative from the Cypress family has rather high indicators of frost resistance, seedlings in the first year of planting must be sheltered for the winter period.
Juniper medium is a hybrid form obtained by crossing Cossack and Chinese juniper. This species is one of the unpretentious and most reliable for cultivation in the soil and climatic conditions of the middle zone of our country. Junipers are durable and, subject to favorable conditions, can grow for several hundred years.
