Pear - (Pyrus, or in translation "natural product") is a popular and common tree in our gardens. It is valued for its juicy fruits, intensive growth and the ability to harvest for the winter. And pear wood is equal in quality to an ebony tree. It has gained a modern variety of species thanks to the long-standing work of breeders. After all, the wild pear found in nature is small and tart. Among the 5 thousand of its new varieties, one of the favorite gardeners was the pear "August dew", bred in 2002 by the Scientific Research Institute named after Michurin and intended for cultivation in the Central Black Earth Region.

Grade description

This summer pear variety was obtained by crossing winter-hardy and very resistant to many diseases varieties "Tenderness" with the Australian "Triumph of Pakgama", characterized by early maturity, high yield and good fruit taste.

The tree "August dew" is low, grows quickly, its crown is of medium density, slightly drooping. The bark is gray and smooth. Her buds are conical in shape, they quickly wake up after winter. The shoots of this pear are thick, small, curved, with numerous lentils.

Leaves are oblong, medium in size, dark green, shiny. White small flowers are saucer-shaped and equipped with 7-10 petals.

Fruits are of medium size, weighing 100-200 grams, greenish-yellow with many subcutaneous dots and a slight blush on one side. Their skin is smooth, a small spot of rust is observed at the funnel of the fetus.

The fruiting of trees begins at 4 years, when more than 10 kg of pears can be collected from each of them. And their maximum productivity is 200 centners per ha. Ripening occurs in mid-August. The self-fertility of the variety is low, pollinators are needed, among which the best is the variety "In memory of Yakovlev."

Grade advantages:

  • compact crown allows you to grow trees even in small areas;
  • rapid growth and early maturity;
  • high and stable productivity;
  • winter hardiness and resistance to many diseases, especially to scab;
  • high marketability - up to 90%;
  • unpretentiousness and ease of cultivation.

  • low self-fertility;
  • needs constant pruning of the crown, otherwise the fruits are smaller, and with a large yield they ripen of different sizes.

How to prune a pear in spring

Fruit characterization

The fruits of this pear have a sweet and sour taste, their flesh is white, juicy, tender and fine-grained. They are rich in sugar (8.5%), pectins. 100 g of fruits contain 13 mg of ascorbic acid and 40 mg of surfactants.

This variety is referred to as canteens. The fruits are stored for 2 weeks, from which you can cook compotes and jams.

Planting seedlings

Pear prefers sunny places well protected from the wind. She does not like waterlogged lowlands. The best time to plant it is considered autumn.

Before planting, you need to dig a plot and feed the soil with superphosphate, compost and potash fertilizers. At the same time, the roots of the seedling should not be allowed to come into contact with fertilizers. Feeding rates depend on the quality of the soil.

For planting, one-year-old trees with a strong trunk and developed roots are best suited.

Landing technology:

  • dig a hole and loosen the earth in it;
  • 30 cm from its center to place a support for a seedling;
  • lower the seedling into the hole, straightening its roots, and sprinkle it with earth. In this case, the root neck should be slightly higher than the surface of the earth;
  • to compact the soil in the near-stem circle and mulch it with leaves or branches;
  • the distance between the trees should be at least 2 m.

Tree care

For the successful cultivation of the August dew pear, you need:

  1. Watering. During fruiting, it is carried out 5 times a month: in the morning and in the evening. Every tree needs a bucket of water. In arid areas, grooves are dug around trees to maintain moisture. Spray irrigation is often used for this variety. After harvesting, watering is drastically reduced.
  2. Cropping crown. An annual seedling is trimmed at a height of more than half a meter. In a two-year-old tree in spring, extra side branches are removed. Pruning is performed before buds open. This removes no more than a quarter of the total volume of branches.
  3. Constant loosening the soil and weeding weeds.
  4. Wrap before wintering the lower part of the trunk with earth or covering material, and in winter - sprinkling it with snow. From rodents, special protective nets on the trunks are also used.
  5. Top dressing. Every spring, it is necessary to introduce into the near-stem circle manure in the amount of 2 kg per square meter. And in late autumn, trees are fed with ammonia fertilizers, which improve their growth and development.

To increase the size and sweetness of the fruit in the first year, all the flowers are cut off from the trees, and in the second and third, half of them.

Gardeners reviews and tips

Many summer residents consider the pear "August dew" a promising winter-hardy and high-yielding variety, appreciate it for its unpretentiousness and very tasty fruits. They note some features in the cultivation of these trees:

  1. In early spring, when the snow still holds, and the daytime sun is already active, trees often suffer from changes in daily temperatures. On their trunks appear "sunburns", leading young trees even to death. To prevent this disaster allows whitewashing trunks in late autumn. For this purpose, special paints for trees VAK-10-PD, VAK-12-PD or home-made solutions consisting of 10 liters of water, 2 kg of lime and 1 kg of clay are suitable.
  2. Avoid the mentioned damage and autumn tying trunks with polypropylene helps.
  3. Although this variety is winter-hardy, sometimes the trunk freezes at a level above the snow cover. Then it needs to be cut down and the cut-off site treated with garden var. From the sleeping buds there will be shoots that need to be thinned out, leaving the three strongest pieces. And next year, select the best from them, cutting off the rest. But it is necessary to do all these manipulations after the leaves open, because The pear has a high degree of natural regeneration, and you can remove the branches that are still alive in the heat of heat.
  4. The restoration of frostbitten or burnt tissues is facilitated by abundant watering and top dressing of plants with nitrogen and complex fertilizers (up to 30 g for each tree).
  5. A few weeks after flowering, the pear is treated with complex fertilizers applied during its irrigation. And during flowering, for a better fruit setting, a 0.1% solution of boric acid is added under the root (10 g per bucket of water for each tree).
